Ney is one of the main instruments in Iranian traditional music. The ney has been played continually for 4,500–5,000 years, making it one of the oldest musical instruments still in use. This instrument is unique as it is directly taken from nature, which makes its sound warm and close to the heart. The ney is an air-blown flute made of reed plant. It has five finger-holes in the front and one thumb-hole in the back with a brass cover on either the top or both ends of the instrument. The ney is suitable for both solo performances and accompaniments. It can “sing” melodies without words and instill discipline in the player that goes beyond music into everyday life.

Program Information
The Melorin Music School provides one-on-one instruction and group sessions on multiple Iranian instruments. All students are taught basic instrumental technique, posture, technical exercises, radif* and playing Persian repertoires.
Each ney lesson takes place between one teacher and one student for either 30, 45 or 60 minutes. For children's sessions, parents can attend their child's classes.
*Radif is a collection of 300-350 melodic pieces, each one up to 3 minutes in length, used as a basis for improvisation.
